Origin Story

In early 2023, Zachary Shrewbury, community organizer and activist formed an exploratory committee to research the possibility of running for office.

On October 15, 2023, Zachary launched a grassroots campaign for U.S. Senate in West Virginia primarying Joe Manchin. Senator Manchin would drop out of the race less than a month later. Another Democrat entered the race in January, narrowly edging out Zach. However the power he built in southern West Virginia and other parts of the state was unlike any seen before and could not be ignored. As a result of this, he and his former campaign manager decided to form Bluejay Rising to harness the opportunity created through the campaign and develop true grassroots power amongst disenfranchised West Virginians.

It’s time the underserved take back rural America from do nothing politicians through community engagement, unification and amplifying voices.

Our Purpose

Our Work Focuses on:

At Bluejay Rising, we integrate voter registration and engagement into our broader efforts to uplift communities through mutual aid and information dissemination. We believe that empowering individuals with the resources they need to thrive is inherently linked to ensuring their voices are heard in the democratic process.

Through mutual aid initiatives, we aim to provide essential support to communities, addressing immediate needs while fostering trust and relationships. As we deliver food, clothing, and other critical resources, we simultaneously aim to educate community members about their voting rights and the power of their vote. Our volunteers are trained to assist with voter registration on the spot, making it as easy as possible for individuals to check, register or update their voter information.

In addition to our on-the-ground efforts, our print newsletter plays a crucial role in informing and engaging disenfranchised communities. We distribute the newsletter widely, ensuring it reaches individuals who may lack access to digital resources. Each issue includes vital information on upcoming legislation and elections, how to register and restore voting rights, resource information and the stories of community members who have been empowered to vote.

By highlighting the tangible impact that voting can have on local issues, we inspire readers to take action. The newsletter also serves as a platform for sharing the successes of our mutual aid projects, demonstrating the strength of collective community action and encouraging civic participation.

Through these combined efforts, Bluejay Rising strives to build a more inclusive and representative democracy in West Virginia, where every voice is heard and valued.
