Our Founders
Zachary Shrewsbury
Zachary Shrewsbury is a seasoned community organizer, Marine veteran, and political strategist with a deep commitment to progressive causes. A native West Virginian, father, and grandson of a coal miner, he has held various leadership roles, including serving as state director for a progressive veterans organization. Zach’s work has ranged from advocating for renewable energy in West Virginia's coal country to managing voter engagement on political campaigns.
In the Marines, Zach served as a team leader in a Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (FAST) and as a platoon sergeant in the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, exiting the service as an E5. His post-military career has been marked by legislative advocacy, particularly on progressive issues at both state and national levels. He has led community engagement initiatives across Appalachia, organizing canvassing efforts to understand citizens' priorities and fight for legislative change.
Zach’s commitment to his community is symbolized by the bluejay, an emblem of resistance against MAGA extremism in rural West Virginia. Inspired by a bluejay feather gifted to him during his campaign, this symbol represents his dedication to ensuring the voices of marginalized communities are heard and empowered. Zach is the founder of Bluejay Rising.
